October
4, 1999 Dear
Ms. Thank
you for your request for information on Elizabeth Balfour and the Salisbury,
North Carolina, Post Office. I
am enclosing a list of postmasters and their appointment dates for the Salisbury
Post Office, which was established on June 12, 1792, with George Lauman as the
first postmaster. 1
am also enclosing a copy of a letter prepared by this office on the subject of
Elizabeth Balfour’s service at Salisbury, including transcripts of letters to
her from Postmasters General Joseph Habersham (1795-1801) and Gideon Granger
(1801-1814), as reproduced in National Archives Microfilm Publication 601, Letters Sent by the Postmaster General, 1789-1836.
(Copies of particular letters can be obtained
from the National Archives and Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue,
Northwest, Washington, D.C. 20408-0001.) Also
enclosed, for your interest, is a handout prepared by this office which
discusses early women postmasters. I
hope this information is helpful. Sincerely
